There are many different ways that your financial contribution can help the Museum. Donations are always greatly appreciated!
The Greater Southwest Historical Museum is continually building its collection of historic and original objects, documents, photographs, and textiles relating to the culture and history of south central Oklahoma. Donations continue to strengthen our collection and research holdings.
What kinds of artifacts does the Museum collect?
While the Museum collects many things, not all items are appropriate for our collections due to a variety of factors such as provenance, historical significance, size, duplication, or condition. The GSHM is limited by its mission and purpose to preserving and interpreting the social, cultural, and economic history of south central Oklahoma. Objects collected by the museum include pre-historic and historic objects, decorative objects, and folk and historic art of the area. The GSHM also collects historic photographs, documents, and textiles.
How do I donate artifacts to the Museum?
If you are interested in donating, please contact our Curator by phone at 580-226-3857 or by email at knunnelee@gshm.org.
Can I mail or drop off a donation?
Unsolicited donations sent through the mail or without appointment in person cannot be accepted. All prospective donors must speak with the Curator and complete an Artifact Information Form and Temporary Custody Receipt.
How are potential donations reviewed?
All donations are initially reviewed quarterly by the Collections Committee, which make their recommendations to the Board of Trustees whether to accept or decline a specific item. You may also be contacted by staff for additional information about your donation. The Committee's recommendations are then sent to the Board of Trustees for final approval. Donations can still be declined even if approved by the Committee. Upon approval, items officially become part of the Museum's collections as an unrestricted gift.
Will the Museum exhibit the artifacts in my donation?
Donors need to be aware that their artifacts will not be permanently displayed due to preservation concerns. Artifacts are greatly affected by light exposure and fluctuations in temperature and humidity. It is our mission to ensure the continued preservation of our collection for future generations.
Does the Museum accept long-term loans?
The Museum does not accept long-term or "permanent" loans.
